Jewish people in the FSU are in a terrible situation. Many do not have bread to eat. Others are living in deplorable conditions without heat, electricity or running water. Some have been beaten and others killed just because they are Jewish. They have been made the scapegoats for the economic and social upheaval caused by the fall of communism. They are at the same time blamed for both communism, as well as rabid capitalism. Our goal is to help them in any way we are able.

In addition, we assist all Jewish people seeking to immigrate to Israel, getting them to the boats or airports, as well as help them with passports and their paperwork. We established homes in Israel of elderly holocaust survivors without family, so they too could immigrate to Israel. In addition we have provided Russian/Hebrew prayerbooks, Talesim and other religious items to people interested in them.

We are actively involved in many countries, and go by different names in each country. Chevra is the American entity for our international effort. Some countries are "giving countries" while others are "receiving countries." We have been so blessed and are so rich in North America and have the ability to do much to alleviate the suffering and needs of others. Chevra’s work is a way people can make a real difference in the lives of many people in need.

Chevra is a humanitarian organization, not a religious one. While we help primarily Jewish people, we do not promote religious teaching as a prerequisite or incentive for people to receive our help. Our policy is to informally cooperate with other charities seeking to help Jewish people, but we will help any Jews in need regardless of whether they wish to receive religious information or not. Our goal is to help our people in their time of need.
